Lessons from a Lobbycracy: Transformation for Transparency and Rules for Revolving Door

don, 11/04/2013 - 10:30 - 12:30

Public Debate

The Alliance for Lobbying Transparency and Ethics Regulation (ALTER-EU), the Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour (Arbeiterkammer) and the Austrian Trade Union Federation host a public debate on lobbying transparency and the revolving door between public officials and private sector lobbyists in Brussels. Both of these are hot topics at the moment because the policies and instruments relating to them are under review.

The debate, timed to coincide with these two important reviews, involves representatives from ALTER-EU, the European Commission and European Parliament, and is part of the ALTER-EU coalition's annual assembly.

  • Christian Linder, European Commission, Cabinet of Commission Vice-President and Commissioner for Inter-Institutional Relations and Administration Maroš Šefčovič
  • Monica Macovei, Member of European Parliament, Group of the European People's Party
  • Bart Staes, Member of European Parliament, Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance
  • Rachel Tansey, Lobbycracy Campaigner, Corporate Europe Observatory, member of ALTER-EU

The Alliance for Lobbying Transparency and Ethics Regulation (ALTER-EU) is a coalition of over 200 civil society groups from across Europe, concerned with the increasing influence of corporate lobbyists on the EU's political agenda, the resulting loss of democracy in EU decision-making and weakening of urgently needed progress on social, environmental and consumer-protection reforms.

Arbeiterkammer, the Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour, represents the interests of 3 million employees and consumers in Austria.

The Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB) represents the interests of workers based on voluntary membership. The number of members is now approximately 1.2 million. ÖGB is a member of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).
